Why laminate deserves a second look

Why laminate deserves a second look

Modern laminate is a long way from the thin click floors of years past. Today's products have realistic printed grain, textured surfaces, and tough wear layers. Volunteer Flooring & Design installs laminate for Knoxville homeowners who want a wood look at a friendlier price.

It suits rentals, family rooms, hallways, and kids' bedrooms, where a tough surface matters more than a pedigree.

AC ratings in plain English

AC ratings in plain English

The AC (abrasion class) rating tells you how the surface wears. We steer clear of the lightest ratings for most homes.

  • AC3 - light use only, not our usual recommendation
  • AC4 - sturdy for most homes
  • AC5 - heavier use, good for entries, halls, and rentals
  • Water-resistant cores - better for kitchens and baths
How we install laminate

How we install laminate

Laminate floats, so the subfloor must be flat and expansion gaps must be right. We level the floor, use a proper underlayment (with a vapor barrier over concrete, which matters in humid Tennessee), and allow the planks to acclimate before install. If moisture is a constant worry in the room, luxury vinyl plank may be a better call.

Laminate Flooring - frequently asked questions

No. Laminate has a wood-fiber core and is more sensitive to standing water. Vinyl plank has a waterproof core. Our vinyl flooring page explains the difference.

Water-resistant laminate can handle everyday spills. We would not use a standard board right at a sink or dishwasher.

Many years with ordinary care. The wear layer cannot be sanded, so when it finally wears, you replace the boards.

Yes, and we inspect the subfloor at the estimate. If the floor beneath needs work, see our floor demolition and prep page.
