Question 1

How do I choose the right carpet for my home?

Accepted Answer

Start with how the room is used. Bedrooms can go soft and plush, while family rooms, stairs, and hallways do better with tighter constructions like frieze or low loop that hide wear. Bring your questions about pets, kids, and stains to the showroom or your shop-at-home visit, and we will narrow the field to a few that fit your lifestyle and budget.

Question 2

Is there a cost for a design consultation?

Accepted Answer

No. A consultation is free whether you buy from Volunteer Flooring & Design or not, and there is no pressure to decide on the spot. Take your time with the samples and the written quote.

Question 3

Which carpet fiber do you recommend?

Accepted Answer

It depends on the room. Polyester is naturally stain resistant and soft at a friendly price, while nylon tends to bounce back better in heavy traffic. We will show you both and explain the tradeoffs so you can pick without guessing.

Question 4

How much does carpet installation cost?

Accepted Answer

Most installed carpet projects land somewhere around $3 to $8 per square foot, depending on fiber, pad, and the condition of the subfloor. The only number that matters is the one in your written quote, which covers material, pad, labor, and removal of the old carpet.

Question 5

How long will the install take?

Accepted Answer

Most residential carpet jobs finish in one to three days, depending on square footage, stairs, and whether we are removing old flooring first. We will give you a realistic window when we quote the work.

Question 6

Do you move furniture and haul away old carpet?

Accepted Answer

Yes, we handle the heavy lifting and remove the old carpet and pad as part of the project. We only ask that you clear fragile items, disconnect electronics, and keep pets secured on install day.

Question 7

Can I see samples in my own home?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Our shop-at-home service brings curated carpet samples to your door so you can see color and texture in your own lighting. You are also welcome to browse the showroom in Knoxville.

Question 8

How do I care for new carpet?

Accepted Answer

Vacuum regularly, treat spills quickly, and follow the manufacturer's cleaning guidance, which often calls for periodic professional cleaning to keep the product warranty valid. We will point out what applies to your specific carpet.

Question 9

What warranty covers the installation?

Accepted Answer

Our installation labor carries a lifetime labor warranty along with maintenance support. Product warranties come from the manufacturer and vary by line, and we will review both with you.

Question 10

What if something unexpected turns up during installation?

Accepted Answer

Uneven subfloors or damaged underlayment are the usual surprises. We tell you what we found, show you the options, and fix it properly rather than covering it up. Any added cost is explained before work continues.

Question 11

What hardwood options do you offer?

Accepted Answer

We install both solid and engineered hardwood in a range of species, widths, and finishes, from classic oak to richer tones and herringbone patterns. Samples from Mohawk, Revwood, and other manufacturers are available at the showroom.

Question 12

Solid or engineered hardwood: which should I choose?

Accepted Answer

Solid hardwood is a single piece of wood that can be refinished many times, but it reacts more to humidity swings. Engineered hardwood has a real wood surface over a stable core, which handles East Tennessee's humid summers and many subfloor types more easily. We will recommend one based on your house and where the floor is going.

Question 13

How much does hardwood flooring cost installed?

Accepted Answer

Expect a broad range of roughly $8 to $15 per square foot installed, shaped by species, width, finish, and prep work. Your written quote lays out the exact figure for your project, with no surprise fees later.

Question 14

Can you refinish my existing hardwood instead of replacing it?

Accepted Answer

Often yes. If the boards are thick enough and the damage is surface level, a sand and refinish can bring them back at a fraction of replacement cost. See our hardwood refinishing page for how it works.

Question 15

What does the subfloor need before installation?

Accepted Answer

It should be flat, clean, and dry. In Knoxville that matters because many homes have crawlspaces or basements, so we check moisture and levelness before a single board goes down.

Question 16

How long does a hardwood installation take?

Accepted Answer

Many rooms are done in a day or two, and a full main level usually finishes within a few days. Finishing on site takes longer than prefinished boards, and we will tell you which applies to your project.

Question 17

How do I maintain hardwood floors?

Accepted Answer

Sweep or dry mop regularly, wipe spills right away, and use cleaners made for wood. Felt pads under furniture help, and humidity control through the seasons keeps boards from gapping. Our lifetime maintenance support covers questions as they come up.

Question 18

Can different rooms have different hardwood styles?

Accepted Answer

Yes, as long as the transitions are planned. Many homeowners keep one species throughout the main level and switch tones or plank width in a den or bedroom. We help you sort that out during design.

Question 19

What warranty comes with hardwood installation?

Accepted Answer

Our labor is backed by a lifetime labor warranty. The wood itself carries the manufacturer's warranty, and we will explain what each one covers before you commit.

Question 20

Why choose luxury vinyl plank?

Accepted Answer

It is tough, water resistant, and comfortable underfoot, with realistic wood and stone looks. For kitchens, basements, mudrooms, and homes with kids and pets, it is one of the most forgiving options we install.

Question 21

What vinyl styles can you install?

Accepted Answer

We install luxury vinyl plank, luxury vinyl tile, and sheet vinyl. You can browse more on our luxury vinyl plank page or see the full range in the showroom.

Question 22

Is vinyl flooring really waterproof?

Accepted Answer

Most modern luxury vinyl has a waterproof core, so spills will not damage the planks. Water can still get underneath at seams or edges if there is a leak, so we install carefully and fix moisture sources first.

Question 23

How much does vinyl plank cost installed?

Accepted Answer

Plan on about $4 to $9 per square foot installed, depending on thickness, wear layer, and prep. We put the full cost in writing so you can compare it fairly with other options.

Question 24

How long does installation take?

Accepted Answer

A typical room or two finishes in a day, and most whole-home projects wrap up in one to three days. Removing old flooring and repairing the subfloor adds time, which we factor into your quote.

Question 25

Can vinyl go over my existing floor?

Accepted Answer

Sometimes. If the current floor is solid, flat, and well bonded, vinyl may go right over it. Otherwise we remove it and fix the subfloor, because a rough base shows through the new surface.

Question 26

How do I clean and care for vinyl?

Accepted Answer

A soft broom or microfiber mop with a cleaner approved for vinyl is plenty. Avoid abrasive pads and wax-based products, and use felt pads under furniture.

Question 27

Is vinyl a good choice for pets?

Accepted Answer

Yes. It resists scratches and accidents better than most floors, and a thicker wear layer helps even more. Keeping nails trimmed protects any floor.

Question 28

Do you offer financing on vinyl flooring?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Financing through Wisetack and Hearth can cover materials and installation, subject to approved credit. See our financing page for the details.

Question 29

Why would I pick laminate?

Accepted Answer

Laminate gives you a wood or stone look at a gentle price, with a hard, scratch-resistant surface that suits busy rooms. It is a smart option when you want a big visual upgrade without a big budget.

Question 30

What laminate styles do you carry?

Accepted Answer

Wood-look laminate in light, warm, and dark tones, plus textured and wider-plank styles. Come see them at the showroom or in your own home through shop-at-home.

Question 31

How much does laminate cost installed?

Accepted Answer

Most laminate projects fall around $3 to $7 per square foot installed. The quote you receive covers underlayment, trim, and labor, so there are no add-ons to chase afterward.

Question 32

How is laminate installed?

Accepted Answer

Most laminate is a floating click-together plank laid over underlayment. The prep is what matters: the subfloor has to be flat so the joints stay tight and the floor does not creak.

Question 33

Can laminate be used in kitchens and bathrooms?

Accepted Answer

Standard laminate does not love standing water, so we usually steer wet rooms toward vinyl or tile. Water-resistant laminate lines exist, and we will tell you honestly whether they suit your space.

Question 34

How should I clean laminate?

Accepted Answer

Use a dry microfiber mop or a barely damp one with a laminate-safe cleaner. Avoid soaking the floor or using steam.

Question 35

Can you install laminate on stairs?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Our crews handle stair treads and risers, and you can look at laminate stairs for more detail.

Question 36

Do you remove my old flooring?

Accepted Answer

We do. Demolition and haul-away can be part of the same quote, and our demolition and prep team makes sure the subfloor is ready first.

Question 37

What types of tile do you install?

Accepted Answer

Porcelain, ceramic, natural stone, mosaic, and wall tile. Explore the options on our tile flooring and porcelain tile pages, then handle real samples at the showroom.

Question 38

How much does tile installation cost?

Accepted Answer

Tile typically runs about $10 to $20 per square foot installed, with the spread coming from tile size, pattern, and how much subfloor prep is needed. We quote the whole project in writing.

Question 39

How long does a tile job take?

Accepted Answer

Plan on roughly one to four days for most rooms, because setting, curing, and grouting take their own time. Bathrooms and showers can run longer when waterproofing is involved.

Question 40

Is tile good for East Tennessee homes?

Accepted Answer

It stands up well to our humid summers and handles moisture in kitchens, baths, and entries. Because tile is rigid, a flat, stable subfloor is critical, especially over crawlspaces.

Question 41

How do I choose grout color?

Accepted Answer

Matching the tile gives a calm, seamless look, while contrast outlines each piece. We lay out samples with a few grout options so you can see the difference before choosing.

Question 42

What maintenance does tile need?

Accepted Answer

Sweep, mop with a neutral cleaner, and seal grout and natural stone as recommended. Skip harsh acids on stone.

Question 43

Can tile look like wood?

Accepted Answer

Yes, wood-look porcelain gives you the warmth of plank flooring with the toughness of tile, and it is a popular choice for mudrooms and kitchens.

Question 44

Can you tile a bathroom floor or wall?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Floors, walls, and surrounds are all part of what we do. Browse wall tiles and mosaic tile for ideas.

Question 45

Why finance a flooring project?

Accepted Answer

Financing lets you do the project now and spread the cost over manageable payments instead of draining savings or loading a credit card. It is a fit when a floor is urgent or when you want to do the whole home at once.

Question 46

Who provides your financing?

Accepted Answer

We work with Wisetack and Hearth. Both offer simple online applications, and approval is subject to credit.

Question 47

What terms are available?

Accepted Answer

Terms are generally 12 to 24 months, and financing can cover both materials and installation. Specific terms depend on the lender and your approval, so we will review current options with you.

Question 48

Will applying affect my credit?

Accepted Answer

Checking whether you prequalify is typically a quick online step. The lender explains how the application is handled before you submit, so you can decide for yourself.

Question 49

How do I apply?

Accepted Answer

Ask during your estimate or call us at (865) 874-6186, and we will point you to the right application. You can also read more on our financing page.

Question 50

What happens after I am approved?

Accepted Answer

We finalize your selections, set the install date, and get to work. Your payments are handled with the lender, not with us.
