Stairs are the first thing guests see and one of the hardest-working surfaces in the house. Volunteer Flooring & Design builds hardwood staircases that feel solid underfoot, tie into the floors around them, and hold up to daily traffic.
Our own crew handles it all in one visit: removing carpet or old treads, checking the structure underneath, fitting new treads, risers, and nosings, and finishing. One crew means one schedule and one warranty.
Solid oak, maple, and hickory treads are a classic choice because they can be refinished down the road. Engineered treads can make sense when you are matching an engineered floor, and they are less prone to movement.

Expect demolition and prep first, followed by installation of treads and risers using adhesive and fasteners placed to stay out of sight. Finishing comes last, with stain if requested and protective coats. Timing depends on the staircase, and we will give you a clear schedule before starting.
Most homeowners want stairs that look like a natural continuation of the main floor. We work from the same stain and sheen as your hardwood or refinishing project. Prefer a contrast, such as dark treads and white risers? We will mock it up on a sample before ordering anything.

Yes. We remove the carpet, pad, and staples, inspect the treads underneath, and either build on them or replace them if they are damaged.
Many staircases are finished in a few days, from demolition through finishing. We confirm the schedule when we quote, and you will know when the stairs are ready to use.
That is the goal. We brush stain onto samples of the same wood so you can approve the color first. If your floor needs a refresh too, ask about hardwood refinishing.
Wood can be slick in socks. A matte or satin finish helps, and we can add discreet traction if kids or older relatives use the stairs. Carpet is another option, covered on our carpet stairs page.
